‘Try and make it
look plain’
23 June 2010

The 2010 Arts Council Annual Review was far more sober than the preceding year’s equivalent, befitting the gloomy state of the economy, and draconian cuts to funding of the arts.

Last year’s Annual Review, dated about a year earlier, was a playful piece of print full of expressive typography. The 2010 edition was briefed to adhere strictly to the Baskerville and Frutiger prescribed by Arts Council guidelines.

The desired look was one of sober reflection, in a climate where job cuts in the arts are widespread, and funding for the foreseeable future is going to be significantly reduced. The opulence of the 2009 edition was decidedly out of step by the time we got to 2010.
